Does anyone on here like swing and gypsy jazz music? Or do you play swing on fiddle or guitar? I'm in a Swing band and I play the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, upright bass and some piano =D Just want to start a conversation!

I really enjoy jazz and swing. When I was in college, I played piano and mountain dulcimer in a couple of jazz ensembles. It is HARD music to play (usually I play bluegrass on dulcimer and classical on piano), but I enjoyed the challenge. There isn't much of it going on in the music places I hang out, so I'm terribly out of practice now. The other day I pulled out some of my jazz charts just for fun and it was an awful sound! I still love listening though.

Who are your favorite artists/albums?
My favorite overall album is probably John Coltrane's "Love Divine". My favorite jazz pianist is Keith Jarrett. And I always love me some good David Grisman gypsy swing tunes!

I didn't see that anyone replied to this! That is cool that you can play some jazz on piano! I actually think jazz is a lot easier than bluegrass, I like improvising and such with swing and jazz, it's so much fun! I compete in contests, which of course the judges don't like swing T_T their loss I guess lol. I never get very high up though with the scoring, I just do it for fun and all the jamming that goes on at them. All my favorite artists are listed in my profile, I have many of them! My music teacher is in the band The Hot Club of Spokane, he is the fiddle player. You have to look them up on Youtube, they just have one album out now and I'm not sure if you will be able to find it if you try and look it up. =D

I love Swing and jazz! But I am a lover of old classic stuff! Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tex Beneke, to oldies Smile

And I LOVE Deanna Durbin, except I like her acting better than her choice of music (more opera style).

The other GREAT jazz/swing guys I love to listen to are the Marx Brothers, and sure they're great comedians too, but as a musician I LOVE how they mix the pure classical stuff with the swinging beats love it! Chico's the the greatest on that piano!

I'm so fuzzy on the genre boundaries. Do Sinatra, Crosby, Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, etc., fit this description? Or is that "big band"? Or is "big band" a subgenre of jazz/swing?

It's all so confusing. Razz
