I became involved in pro-life ministry when I was a very shy 21 year old kid. A friend from church, Mr. Les Riley, started the voter initiative Personhood Mississippi. He invited several of us over to his house where we prayed and read the Word and then he laid out what kind of a fight we had before us; the question was, "Since Christ is King over all the earth how are we going to love 'the least of these', our unborn neighbors?" Personhood is not the incremental approach of regulating murder, but it addresses the root issue - this life is uniquely created by God and it has worth because it is made in His image; not, life has worth if someone else says it does.

Over the next year several of his children and I would go to festivals and churches to collect signatures for the petition. The Lord eventually opened my eyes to the fact that Mr. Les' daughter Ellen would make a wonderful wife if somebody would be man enough to lay down his life for her. Smile

We had about a year in between the petition drive and the campaign where we would go to one of the abortion clinics in Memphis for sidewalk counseling. The Lord has shown us many kindnesses, many lessons about Himself, many lessons about ourselves, many hearts and lives saved. One thing He taught us about sidewalk counseling is that our job is not to save lives primarily, our job is to rest in who He is and plead with other's to look to Him.

During the campaign Ellen and I were married. We had no clue how good marriage was! Through it the Lord has shown me how little I really love people, and I trust He is increasing my love.

When the election proved how much Mississippians loved their birth-control more than their neighbors; really, how much we feared possibly being inconvenienced more than we believed God's word, it was disappointing. But the goal for us was never to just pass a law that made abortion illegal, the goal was, and still is, to turn ever heart to the obedience of Christ. He is worthy of every life He creates.

Right after the election my wife had a miscarriage. The Lord is all love to us for love of Christ. At this time the Word of God became more sweet to me than ever before. We boast in the hope of complete redemption, of not just eternal existence but eternal life. Death is always a reminder of the ruin of sin, but it is also a reminder of God's call for us to return to Him. Whether it is the spiritual darkness of an abortion mill or the spiritual darkness of a local Baptist church the Sovereign rights and powerful gospel of Christ is enough to bring life and light.

Personhood Mississippi is getting ready to start petitioning for round two. Lord willing we will stay the course and see many hearts turned to Him.
My wife is expecting again, and we praise God for His mercy. Soon we'll be heading back to do more sidewalk counseling, and I pray the women going in can see how much we love them.
