I joined HSA a while ago and decided to stop by again after a friend mentioned it in her blog. Thought I'd join this group as I have lived on a farm/ranch all my life and always enjoy talking about this topic. Mr. Green

We used to farm and grew alfalfa for seed as well as some other crops. Over the years we've raised cattle(mainly cow/calf), buffalo, elk, horses, and now we are just back to cattle(feeder calves) and a few horses. Oh, yes, and my Mom raises chickens, turkeys and has some egg layers.

We recently sold our cow/calf herd and have switched over to feedlot which we like a lot better already. The past few years have been rough living through BSE(we live in Canada) but we've continued on and, bit by bit, the industry has been strengthening again. It really affected us here since we live in Feedlot Alley, which feeds the majority of Canada's cattle, as it is the best place(weatherwise, location, etc.) to feed cattle.

My brother recently bought a ranch this past summer about 10 minutes away. He and I turned his corrals into a feedlot and we both feed calves there. My dad and sister feed calves here so it is quite a family operation. Smile I go back and forth between both places helping(fixing corrals, treating sick calves, treating calves when they come in, deworming, etc.) Life is never dull with animals!

This past summer my sister and I cell grazed one of our irrigated fields and are planning to do it on a bigger scale this year. We live in a very dry area so have to irrigate quite often throughout the summer. We have bother irrigated and dryland.

My sister is the horse trainer. She is currently working with the five here and enjoys training using the John Lyons method. I enjoy riding but training was just not my thing. Rolling Eyes I did have a horse but he developed early arthritis (he was only 4) and would go lame not after much time was spent working with him. Someday I'll get myself a good ol' ranch horse. Smile

So that is me... Very Happy
