This will be a short update as I have a much longer one coming in a few days. When I got back from the US it had already been determined that I would be getting a new work laptop. I had had the old laptop for 3.5 years and it was showing its age. I was having difficulties even using it to show presentations while on furlough because it would hang.
The new laptop arrived on Tuesday and I was up into the wee hours of the night getting everything moved over from my old personal laptop. I have a list of 90 applications that I needed installed on my computer for me to be able to do my work. It took me lots of time compiling the list, downloading the software and then installing the software. I then migrated documents, photos, music, settings, and misc. other data to the new laptop. It is sweet. It is so much faster than my old laptop and I am able to do so many more things for work with it. I am really liking it.
The new laptop is a Dell XPS M1330. It has an LED antiglare screen with 0.3 megapixel webcam built in. I have a dual core 2.5 Ghz processor with 4 GB of memory and a 7200 RPM 150 GB hard drive. The battery should last about 3 hours. It has a biometric fingerprint reader and can preloaded with Vista Business. I reinstalled immediately with Windows XP Pro. I can run my virtual machines without any difficulties with the hardware specs. It is lighter and smaller than my old one as well which I like very much because of the travelling that I do. Everything about the new laptop is way better.
Here is a series of photos for you to see the differences in appearance between the two computers.
My new laptop is on the left and the old one is on the right.
You can see the size difference in this photo.
The new one is all black. They used to sell this model in red, but do not offer it any more (at least here in the UK) or I would have had it in red.
The screen is really nice. You can see things on it at very sharp angles.
I also wore shorts and a short sleave shirt today for the first time this year. It was a quite comfortable 15 Celsius today.
