07 June 2009 Update

Sun Jun 07, 09 7:58 pm

The big news is that I will be making a visit to the US in just over a weeks time. I am very much looking forward to seeing my nephew, David. I will be arriving in the early evening hours of 16/06 after leaving Carlisle at 0545 (2345 15/06 CST). It will be a long day of travel. I then will be in Bloomington until 07/07 when I fly to OM USA in Atlanta, GA in the morning. On 23/07 I return to England where I will arrive the next day around noon in Carlisle. All told I will be in the US about 5.5 weeks.

I am already beginning to count up the various activities here in Carlisle that I am going to miss while I am away. As I reflect upon this I begin to realize how much Carlisle has become my home and how much I am going to miss it while in the US. I will miss doing things with my friends here, miss the activities that only happen in the summer, and miss the comfort of being at "home". I will have to readjust my language so that I speak American English and readjust culturally in my mind so that I think American instead of English. Does that sound strange? I guess it should not be strange since I have lived in the UK for coming up on 4 years and it really has become my home in many ways of my life.

Typical evening in Carlisle. A game evening with Jacco, Jamie, Thomas, Moray and Kirsten playing Railroad Tycoon.

***Work***
Work is going well enough. I will be moving a copy of our Exchange (email server) to the US tonight. On Monday we will begin the process of bringing the copy of the server online in the US. I am trying to tie up many of the loose ends on the email migration project by the time I travel back to the US.

***Carlisle Life***
We had 3 baptisms at church last weekend. It was really nice. The weather was absolutely gorgeous for the baptisms.

Family, friends and church family of those being baptised.

I also cycled last Saturday with a friend to Gretna Green, Scotland. It was not that far of a ride, but it really hit the spot for me. I was able to relax so much on the ride there and back.

I am still not driving although I am taking driving lessons so that I can pass the practical part the UK driving test. This is the equivalent of the behind-the-wheel test we have in the US. The difficulty is that the UK driving agency are very specific and detailed for how you have to drive so that is why I have take the driving lessons. All Americans have to take driving lessons if they don't want to fail their driving exam. I will not be able to actually get my UK driving licenses until sometime in August at the soonest because of being away, but I will be able to practice while I am in the US.

Last evening I went down to Buttermere Lake in the Lake District where a work colleague was participating in a paragliding competition. We had a BBQ and then watched them paraglide down from the surrounding mountains. It was really nice.

Buttermere Valley is one of the pretties valleys in the Lakes.

Pam, Becky and Vivian. If you look closely you might be able to see some paragliders flying around the ridge line. Only two of the paragliders landed in the lake!

Today is a day or rest and I hope to get in a bit of reading.
