I have been in the US for 2 weeks and will be with my family for another week. My travel was uneventful except for a two hour delay when travelling down from Chicago by the bus due to an accident on the motorway. It took me very little time to get over jet lag with sleep, but it was at least a week for my stomach to feel hungry at the right times.
With Family
I got to see my nephew the day after I arrived.
The day I arrived it was too late and he had already gone to bed. I got little David a gift of official Carlisle United football kit (soccer uniform.) It is a bit large for him but he is really cute in it when he tried it. He will eventually grow into it.
I had hoped to see David a bit more, but he has been sleeping so much that I have not seen him as much as I had hoped. We did go to the pool for his first swim while I have been here. That was a real privilege to see him swim for the first time.
I have as well been seeing a few of my friends and supporters. My first weekend in the US my brother and sister-in-law had a lot of my friends around for a party and that was really fun to see them all. On the 4th of July a few friends will be coming around and we will celebrate the US Independence together. It has been 4 years since I have been in the US for Independence Day so it will be really nice seeing that with friends and family.
I went camping with my family last weekend. That was good fun. My sister Kelli and I were partners in a day long canoeing trip which was probably the highlight of the camping trip. I arrived a day and a half late for the camping trip due to work obligations so it was not as nice and relaxing of an event as I had hoped it would be. I still enjoyed getting out and spending time with my family even though it was shorter holiday than planned.
Work
A good bit of my time has been spent working each morning remotely from Carlisle from 0600 - 1200 CST. I have been working for OM's African office, US office, Canadian office, Irish office and spending a lot of time working in Carlisle since being here in the US. I am getting ready for my trip to the US office with a few phone meetings and a lot of research. They have a few different tasks for me to look at while I am there, but the big task will be to work on upgrading their switches and routers. Some of their kit I think is about 10 years old and has been giving them some problems over the past few years.
Last week Thursday we attempted to complete the last major phase for email migration from the UK to the UK. That went horribly wrong due to some technical complications and I worked from Thursday evening at 1630 until 1800 on Saturday with only a few cat naps. It was an exhausting time of work to recover the situation and to top it all off the migration failed completely and we had to revert back all email back to the UK. We are still trying to evaluate a way forward, but our current thoughts on a way forward would have the migration extending to over a month and longer to complete as we move each mailbox individually across from the UK to the US. Some of the larger mailboxes will take over 24 hours to move and the smaller ones will take 30 minutes to 2 hours to move. While we are moving a mailbox the user will not be able to receive or send email although they can view their email and work in Outlook.
