I feel like there is a certain irony in the title of my last blog post and my difficulty finding a title for today's post. Why? Because the intended subject matter for this post is my trip to the ER last Saturday, the 911 call we had to make on the way home, and trips to specialists for mystical and sometimes inexplicable symptoms. Before you get too upset, the 911 call had nothing to do with my health and everything to do with getting some drunk arrested. That was fun.
Well, to start things off I'd been having persistent allergic reactions (hives) to something for a little over a month. Last Friday we finally went to an allergist and got that taken care of. This hardly comes into the story at all as things stand now except that it did happen and we found out to which substance I am allergic. This substance (bahia grass) happens to have been kept on the back porch of my cabin for months in the form of bales of animal feed. My parents now refuse to let me sleep in "my" cabin and I have been sleeping on an inflatable mattress on the living room floor for nearly a week now. At least I have the inflatable mattress.
Thursday was the start of the weird symptoms. (Note that this was before I went to see the allergist.) They started off with a dragging left foot, a thick feeling in the throat, and just a general sense of something not being quite as it should be. Other than that, I didn't feel bad. Then they went away. The next day they came back and they never quite went away. I didn't finish out the work day because my mom and sister came and got me. The next day, I woke still feeling strange and called in to work. Symptoms would come and go and when my mom finally saw the dragging leg she decided that the Emergency Room was where we belonged.
At the Emergency Room they admitted me quickly because I was exhibiting stroke symptoms. (Also, added to the list was numbness in one side of the face, difficulty speaking, and lack of balance.) The ER team ran a number of tests including a CT scan but everything came up normal. They said that they didn't know what was going on. They thought it was inner ear and they recommended that I see an ENT. Then they sent us home.
On the way home (this is the fun story), a drunk driver shot past us on the left-hand side and stayed in the left lane. This was disconcerting as we were traveling on a two-lane highway. Then the guy slowed down some. My mom was yelling at my sixteen year old sister not to pass him. (Of course not. We figured he was on drugs and didn't know what he was doing.) As we started to slow down he moved to the center of the road and began to weave back and forth like he was trying to cut us off. My mom began yelling not to stop and to call for help. "Who do I call?" I asked (remember my brain isn't all it should be at the moment), "911?" "Yes!" exclaimed my mom. "911! Don't stop!" But the guy had nearly stopped and we were quickly coming to a standstill. There was another vehicle bearing down on our tail. The crazy driver swerved to the right just enough that Alethia could get around him on the left. She took that chance just as the 911 operator answered. I gave the operator all the pertinent information (location, description, plate numbers) and she said they were sending someone. We drove straight to the police station, where we gave a statement and discovered they had caught the guy.
And to summarize, we went to the ENT yesterday. I haven't had some of the original symptoms since Saturday. But I'm easily over-stimulated as far as the senses go and have trouble with balance and some general proprioception. I feel like my thought processes get hung up way too quickly, also. There's also a general "off" feeling that I can't describe and that everybody wants me to be able to. The ENT doesn't know what is going on. He says it doesn't sound like classic inner ear problems but we'd go ahead and do the dizziness tests. I've been referred to a neurologist. I've also missed three days of work.
That is what's been going on. Prayers are appreciated.
