Saralicia's Speculations

Avoiding the Proverbial Phenomenon of the Cat-Fight

Wed Mar 14, 12 3:49 pm

I was doing some thinking the other day and I realized that no one has ever told me what to do when two (or more) gals like the same guy and said guy has not made his preferences known. (Please see disclaimer at the bottom.) I have always assumed that in such a situation I should back off and get out of the way because that is polite. As a Christian it is rude to like the same guy that a sister in Christ also likes. Besides, because this nice fellow is liked by someone else, he is obviously not meant for me.

But then I thought that even though it's difficult for me to imagine at times that a guy might like me above other awesome girls, maybe he would!!! Maybe the fellow I'm destined to marry is also liked by another girl. What is a gal to do in that situation? Should she immediately launch an oreo ball mailing campaign? Should she leave baskets of brownies and chocolate chip cookies for him at work? Should she leave chocolate and roses for him in the seat of his car? (On second thought, that last one sounds like a pretty bad idea. Especially in summer.) What do you think a girl should do in such a situation? I'll welcome serious answers as well as silly.

*Disclaimer: Just because I mention this hypothetical scenario does not mean that one should ultimately jump to the conclusion that I like the same guy as somebody else. For all you know, I may not like someone at all. Further assumptions should not be made regarding who it is I like. You might be wrong and it's very difficult to swim back after jumping to Conclusions.

Pursue him slightly to see which he'll pick - you or her. Then, after you see, you can adjusted your responses thus. But I have actually no experience in this area, so that may all be malarky.

and I hate that Island!

Phantom Tollbooth reference? Wink

How 'bout if the guy doesn't care for either?

Just because some other girl likes him does not mean he couldn't be the one for you. That is pretty silly.

I like Anna's advice. Cool

On a similar note, lately I have been mulling over how I would respond to a guy if he were to, after initially appearing to show interest in me, but then seriously go after another young lady, come around again if things did not work out between them. Is it only me or would one feel like leftover meat loaf? Confused (Ditto Sarah's disclaimer.)

^You could say he just came to his senses?

I dunno--depends on the guy. :S But did I say I don't know? Razz

Your disclaimer and mention of the Island of Conclusions wins!

I disagree that it's rude for you to like the same person that another girl likes. If that's the case, than she's rude for liking who you like. There are some who say that all's fair in love and war. Technically, until the preacher declares a couple man and wife, they're not off limits. However, it is considered inappropriate to pursue after two parties have made their declarations of affection and intent.

I agree with Dave P.

What Dave said for me too. It's by no means rude, imho, to like the same guy. My OWN personality is one that would back off enough and let the guy decide who he wants in such a case, but I'll still go on with my life and treat him the same as I've been treating him up to that point...that's my deciding factor, more or less. But, that's just me and the way I handle such matters. Although...I see where you get the 'it's not nice'...I've felt that philosophy's presence strongly. I just ignored it though. Very Happy
