On my playlist this week: Sara Groves
Sun Jan 13, 08 12:55 am
One of my brothers has been a Sara Groves fan since her first album, but I had kind of forgotten her from my playlist until last week. I've been listening to her latest album here though, and she's just amazing - perhaps more so than ever. I'm looking forward to catching up with her last couple albums when I can.
A few albums back, my favorite song from her was called Jeremiah. Contrasting the fire that burned in Jeremiah's bones (see Jer 20:9) she says...
I was looking to myself and I forgot the power of God.
I was standing... with a sparkler in my hand.
Those lines painted the mental image that have accompanied Isaiah 50:11 in my mind since the first time I heard it. There have been (and are occasionally still) times when I felt myself standing there like that, lighting my own way fueled by ambition and desire... and whenever I've been able to come out of that dimly light funk it's been by breaking down and meditating on the hope that's described in those next verses...
Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, Who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were hewn And to the quarry from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain; When he was but one I called him, then I blessed him and multiplied him... the sky will vanish like smoke, And the earth will wear out like a garment And its inhabitants will die in like manner; But My salvation will be forever, And My righteousness will not wane.
- Isaiah 51:1-5
The new album is good, so check it out when you can:
Oh, and our own Mercy Hope did

I was a reluctant Sara Groves fan - since everyone I knew was raving about her when her first album came out -- I figured she couldn't be that good! I appreciate her orginial style and the fact that she is a reluctant star.
Her new album looks fabulous. And I'm sure it will only confirm my beliefs that she is the best female lyricist in CCM.

Good thoughts, Camden. 'Preciate the verses.

I haven't listened to her much since her third CD came out... I really should look into her newest one. I really liked her 2nd CD (Conversations, which is technically her first "official" cd)
Unfortunately, my local CCM radio station only plays one of her songs and I'm bored to tears with it

I do love Sara and her music. Her CDs All Right Here and Conversations are older but IMHO are also essentials if you like her music.
And thanks for the interview mention!

I'm a fan. =)
I think I like Sara best when it's just her and her piano. Her lyrics are so honest that they're almost diminished by a full production; when all that is stripped away, the strength of the songs really comes through.

I am a fan of Sara Groves, I personally like it when the Chritian radio station I usually listen to does an interview with her. She sounds like such a down to earth person.

Oh, yeah… I get chills every. single. time. I listen to “When the Saints.” Kinda ranks right up there with the Newsboys “He Reigns” in its scope and passion I think.

I discovered Sara's music about 1 1/2 years ago and her lyrics always speak to me...I'll have to check out her new album, thanks for blogging about it!
